Thermometers and Temperature

Here are a few great sites to use when learning about thermometers and temperature:

This thermometer shows the temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit.  As you change the temperature, the image will change to reflect the current outdoor conditions.

Topmark's Thermometer Practice:
Practice reading horizontal or vertical thermometers.  You can also choose to find the difference in temperatures.  Celsius only.

EChalk's Thermometer:
Use this interactive thermometer to practice reading temperatures and differences.  This thermometer is customizable, you can choose the minimum and maximum temperatures, intervals, move the slider to mark a temperature, and use the marker to note the previous location.

Thermometer Quiz:
Students practice reading temperatures with this interactive quiz.  Fahrenheit only.

Temperature Game:
Choose Fahrenheit, Celsius, or Kelvin and then click and drag the images/events to their correct temperatures.

Keeping Warm:

Comparing Numbers with More and Less Symbols

Dreambox Learning has some great interactive math activities that can be used on your Smartboard.  Dreambox Learning is a subscription based service, but right now you can try some of their activities including Comparing Numbers with More and Less Symbols

Using the hungry alligator metaphor and starting with smaller numbers, students focus on using the symbols correctly. Then, First graders focus on comparing numbers up to 100, but as they advance they can compare higher numbers. Then students are challenged to understand the values of numerals based on their place in the number. (For example, 587 and 578.) Eventually the alligator is removed and only the symbols remain.
