Full Moon and Duck: Great Brainteasers

I love brainteasers.  I especially love Full Moon and Duck: Think Outside the Flock because they have no written directions.  You have to figure out what to do using using logic and a little trial and error.  Try using brainteasers on your Smartboard, too!  Your students will love them.

Also see my brainteasers links for more great games!

Newsmap: A Visual of Today's News

Newsmap is a site that provides a visual representation of the news as aggregated  from Google News.  What I like about Newsmap is the how color is used to differentiate between types of new stories.  For example, the blue headlines are all sports related while the gradients of those colors also show you how recent the story is.  The user can toggle on or off the types of headlines and can choose news from other counties as well.

SmartyGames

SmartyGames is a site with a variety of interactive games for elementary students.  Choose from math, money, time, counting, and reading for students to practice skills.  There are also some games just for fun.  Many of these activities will work well on a SMARTboard but some require keyboards.

I generally don't post links to full sites as they are usually filled with ads.  But I am posting to SmartyGames because it is AD FREE and will keep your students engaged.

LinkWithin: Adding "You May Also Like" to Your Posts

I have been noticing recently that many of the blogs I follow have had suggested posts (you may also like...) at the end of each post.  Many of these blogs were created in Blogger, which is also the platform that I use.  So, I set out to add this widget through Blogger and found that it was not a Blogger tool.  But I did find it! The widget is called LinkWithin and it adds 3-5 related posts (with thumbnails, text, and links) at the end of your posts.  So far it is not perfect, as the related posts that have been chosen do not always relate, but I don't use a large variety of keywords either. I do think the widget will be useful to keep readers interested in my blog.

Right now LinkWithin is free and advertisement free.  It works with Blogger, WordPress, and TypePad, and there is an option for other blog platforms, too.

Strange thing I also noticed after posting this is that LinkWithin has chosen some external posts for this particular article.  I wonder if this is because I am talking about their widget?  All of my other posts have links to my own blog's posts- so I will keep an eye on this as I am not interested in advertising other sites.

Hundreds of Activities for Your Smartboard

Interactive Sites for Education is a collection of K-5 online, interactive games and simulations that can be used on your Smartboard for teaching and learning.

This site is my own personal compilation of the best online activities for math, ELA, science, social studies, brainteasers, art, music, holidays, world language, and typing (some are still in the works!).  Use these activities on your Smartboard for engaging and fun whole or small group instruction.  Or, allow students to access the site on individual computers or at home or school to practice skills and concepts.

ThingLink- Interactive Images

ThingLink is a site that allows you to make your images interactive by adding little interactive "hotspots" to it.  These "hotspots" can link to a website, video, audio, or text.  Here is an example:

ThingLink is free, but you are limited to 10 image uploads and 100,000 views.  Thanks to Nancy Sharoff, who shared this resource on the Discovery Education Blogs, you can get an educator's discount and sign up for a year for just $20. This will give you Plus account with the ability to upload 500 images with 500,000 views. Use coupon code TLEDU for this special pricing.
